The New Zealand Falcon, known locally as the Kārearea, stands as an iconic and endemic bird of prey in New Zealand, embodying the spirit of the country's rugged wilderness. This majestic raptor, Falco novaeseelandiae, is a master of the skies, renowned for its exceptional speed, agility, and sharp talons. As an integral part of New Zealand's ecology, the Kārearea plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of its ecosystems by primarily preying upon a variety of avian and terrestrial species, thus helping to control pest populations.

However, this magnificent bird faces significant challenges in the wild. Habitat loss due to urbanization, forestry, and agriculture, along with the introduction of invasive species, such as possums and rats, have encroached upon their territories and diminished their prey base. Furthermore, Kārearea frequently fall victim to accidents with man-made structures, like power lines. Kahu Conservation is committed to raising awareness about the threats faced by the New Zealand Falcon and is dedicated to the protection of this endangered species.

Through education initiatives, advocacy for habitat preservation, and ongoing research efforts, we strive to ensure the survival of this remarkable bird and the preservation of its vital ecological role in New Zealand's diverse landscapes. By sharing the story of the Kārearea, we hope to inspire a collective effort to safeguard their future and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Kahu, Australasian Harrier (Circus approximans): Guardian of the Marshlands

The Australasian Harrier, also known as the Kahu or Swamp Harrier, is a captivating bird of prey also indigenous to Australia and Papua New Guinea – Known as the Papuan Marsh Harrier ( Circus spilothorax).

This raptor is an essential player in the ecological tapestry of wetlands, marshes, and open grasslands. With its distinctive hovering flight and acute hunting skills, the Harrier plays a vital role in controlling populations of rodents, small mammals, and waterfowl. However, these remarkable birds are not without their challenges. The loss of wetland habitats due to urban development, drainage, and agricultural practices has placed pressure on their populations.
