Kahu, Australasian Harrier (Circus approximans): Guardian of the Marshlands

The Australasian Harrier, also known as the Kahu or Swamp Harrier, is a captivating bird of prey also indigenous to Australia and Papua New Guinea – Known as the Papuan Marsh Harrier ( Circus spilothorax).

This raptor is an essential player in the ecological tapestry of wetlands, marshes, and open grasslands. With its distinctive hovering flight and acute hunting skills, the Harrier plays a vital role in controlling populations of rodents, small mammals, and waterfowl. However, these remarkable birds are not without their challenges. The loss of wetland habitats due to urban development, drainage, and agricultural practices has placed pressure on their populations. The Morepork, or Ruru known for its distinctive haunting call that echoes through New Zealand's night, is an iconic and endemic owl species. As New Zealand's only surviving native owl, it plays a critical role in nocturnal ecosystem dynamics by preying on insects, rodents, and other small creatures. However, the Morepork faces challenges in the form of habitat loss, predation by introduced species, and human interference. Our latest colonizer, Barn Owl sightings began in the 1940’s, but it wasn’t until 2008 that the species began to establish a small population It’s a beautiful and exciting addition to our native raptor population.

The Barn Owl is a mesmerizing and enigmatic bird, known for its ghostly appearance and silent flight, this owl species is a masterful nocturnal hunter, preying on small mammals and rodents. It has plays a vital role in the ecosystem, helping to regulate pest populations.
